EXCEPT project results on the future perspective of youth in Europe presented in Estonia
28.11.2017

On 28th of November, EXCEPT project coordinator Marge Unt gave a presentation titled "The open labour market and the closed pension systems from the perspective of youth" at the seminar of Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Life course Studies at Tallinn University. The presentation centred on the long-term socio-economic consequences of labour market insecurity, and looked at both the demand-side (interviews with youth, survey data) as well as supply side (expert interviews, desk research). Based on the survey data, it was identified that youth are aware of the need to save for their pension, but are less inclined to actually save, compared to older generations. The pension systems however are not flexible, and do not take into account the atypical careers and career breaks usual in the life of youth nowadays, leaving them to face higher risk of old-age poverty. The seminar was a success, especially because colleagues with expertise in the area of pension systems were present and gave additional input on the issue.

A comprehensive analysis of the long term socio-economic consequences of insecure labour market positions is available in the 16th part of EXCEPT working paper series (EXCEPT Working Paper No. 16).
